'Big Man' by Lucy Bucknall

Sculpture in the Gardens is on now until 12 February 2012, at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. It a great destination for a day out, and they have a good café too.

This sculpture by Lucy Bucknall, ‘Big Man’, won the McConnell Family Supreme Award – judged by the curatorial panel. Other artists include Jim Wheeler, Tui Hobson, Mia Hamilton, Bryan Verey, John Edgar, Gill Gatfield, Bing Dawe and Jamie Pickernell. It’s an interesting and entertaining mix of new and well-known artists. Highly recommended.

Check out the Otago Sculpture Trust to see the sculptures located at Observation Point, where Ralph Hotere used to have his studio. Also on this site you’ll see a link to sculptures in Dunedin, such as this one.

New nz-artists website

Welcome to the new-look site and this blog, and thanks to Liz Fraser for creating the site and sorting out the teething problems.

Hope you have in your diaries two important dates in NZ’s art scene that are looming very close now:

1)       The Art Fair, Thursday 4- Sunday 7 August at the Viaduct Event Centre, 161 Halsey St (extension of wharf), Wynyard Quarter, Auckland harbour-front). Door sales $25 with various concessions (student, senior, etc). This is an event not to be missed – it is the most spectacular display of the best and often most controversial art in Australasia! Organised by Jennifer Buckley of Orex Art, it is the most important event in NZ’s art calendar.

2)    The opening of the newly developed Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki  – on Saturday 3 September at 11am.  And hopefully, at last, traffic flow will return to normality in Kitchener Street so it’s easier to visit all the other galleries around there!  Advance notice has just been given of an opening function for Friends of the Gallery only, on Sunday September 4, from 6-8.30pm. It’s probably worth joining just for that – ph. Leigh on 307 7705.

Watch this space for info about NZ art – galleries, exhibitions, artists and images. And send us your own updates on what’s happening, and views on the art you see.
